Distinct Viking Lineages Found in Faroe Islands and Iceland, Study Shows Introduction to Viking Colonization of the Faroe Islands and Iceland Geneticists have analyzed the Y-chromosome haplogrou p distribution in the Faroe Islands, colonized by Vikings circa 900 CE, and com pared it to modern Scandinavian  po pulations. Their analysis revealed that the ha ploty pe distribution in the Faroe Islands most closely resembled Norway and Denmark, with weaker resemblance to Sweden, and diverged from Iceland. This su p ports the conclusion that Viking settlers in the Faroe Islands originated across Scandinavia, differing geogra phically and genetically from those who settled in Iceland.
